For their research on new testing methods for dental materials, Kulzer honors young scientists around the world with the IADR/Kulzer Travel Award. The award enables them to travel to the world’s largest congress in dentistry and present their research work to a large professional audience.
Even though travel is not possible this year due to the pandemic, Kulzer is maintaining the travel award to recognize the important contribution of young researchers to dentistry. Instead of funding travel to the IADR-Dental Materials Group Business Meeting the company is financially supporting the research of five young scientists.
In interviews the winners talk about their research work and what it means for young investigators to receive the IADR/Kulzer Travel Award.
Takahiko Sakai from Osaka University (Japan) won the IADR/Kulzer Travel Award 2021 for researching on “Artificial intelligence for supporting decision making of implant drilling protocol”
What were you examining?
The purpose of this study was to develop an Artificial intelligence (AI) model for decision support for an appropriate implant drilling protocol using the cone-beam CT (CBCT) images. A trained AI model will suggest implant drilling protocols for obtaining adequate primary stability from CBCT images before surgery.
What was the result of your research?
It was effective for predicting drilling protocols from CBCT images before surgery. We hope that young career dentists can obtain clinical outcomes as good as senior dentists. The results will improve clinical outcomes of an implant treatment. Decision making of implant drilling protocols relies on the skill of the senior dentists.
What surprised you about your work?
We do not always need a huge amount of data for developing AI model. A total of 675 images were not a huge amount of data. Under this condition, the proposed way to select test images (T2) resulted in greater accuracy, sensitivity, and precision than the conventional way (T1).
How much time did you need for the research?
What are you researching now?
We are ongoing to improve the ability of developed AI model. The goal is to develop a clinically available AI model.
Why did you apply for the Travel Award 2021?
My professor recommended me to apply for this award.
What does the award mean to you?
It is my honor, and the award encouraged me. We were able to make attendees to the IADR meeting aware of the potential of AI. It motivates me to do research and to brush up on my research results.
